The controversial limitations of GPT-5

Less than 24 hours after its launch, instead of positive feedback, the lates model received a wave of criticism across social media platforms like Reddit. Many users expressed disappointment, saying the upgrades did not bring meaningful benefits.

A Reddit thread titled “GPT-5 is terrible” gained nearly 3,000 upvotes and more than 1,200 comments from unhappy users. Many wanted the older models like 4o and 4.1 to be kept, with comments such as “I miss 4.1. Bring it back” and “They should let us keep the old models while fixing the new one”. Why?

  • Some were frustrated that the GPT-5 Thinking model only allows 200 messages per week. They also lost access to earlier AI models like o4-mini and o4-mini-high, which were considered more reliable. 
  • OpenAI claimed this new model could reason when needed, but users felt this upgrade limited the usefulness of the paid subscription.

So how did Sam Altman respond

After many users threatened to cancel their subscriptions, Altman posted on X, said that: “First, the message limit for ChatGPT Plus users will be doubled to 400 messages per week. Second, Plus users will still be able to use the older 4o models if they want. Altman added: “We will watch usage as we think about how long to offer legacy models for.”

Then, Altman shared another message saying OpenAI underestimated how much users value some features of GPT-4o, even if GPT-5 is better in most ways. Despite these updates and promises, people who already canceled are unlikely to come back.

But finally, after lots of negative feedback. Sam Altman announced that the GPT-4o model is being brought back and the company will work on improving GPT-5 while deciding how long to keep the old model available.
